To Do Lists

I am the type of person that has lists...everywhere. If I have to remember anything, I write it down. I haven't been doing this for a couple of days so I finally sat down the other day and made a master list.

I made arrangements today to have the kids taken care of. Mary stayed with a friend until Paul picked her up on his way home and another friend took Houghton (and her daughter) to swim.

I am very excited to say I knocked out most of my To Do List!!! I relish the time I have to get errands done sans children...It makes them so much faster and I enjoy the peace of just staring out into space while waiting in line. (at the post office no less!!)

Yeah Me!!! I feel so much better!

Update

So, I am feeling the stress of the Holidays. I really wish I had more time. Doesn't everyone?
I am trying really hard to relax and get into action instead of deciding to do nothing (until the last minute) As I usally do. I had a great weekend and was not home until late afternoon Sunday. I actually didn't mind and my darling husband did laundry. Scary but it turned out O.K. I did have a day of retail therapy and I am much better.

I am trying to get out my Christmas cards but am disappointed we didn't get a family pic to put in or on them. The time we had to get it done was about the time we were all snotty and sick. Fortunately it was gone fairly quickly but we'd all have looked like rudolph. Oh, well, it is the thought that counts right?

Oh and on a totally different note....rent 'Stranger than Fiction' it's a great movie...totally unexpected!

Dress Up

Mary has discovered "dress-up" She decided one day when she was home with Daddy that she wanted her 'butterfly' When I got home Paul informed me he figured out what she wanted but wouldn't let her have it since he thought I wouldn't like it.

But I LOVE it!! Mary wanted her halloween costume!! I let her wear it (which is really a fairy)
So lately she has been wearing her butterfly around and being all cute and calling herself a princess!

I love that she loves to dress up and dance around!!

Time Warp

I don't know how it happens. I get on the computer to check my mail and see what's going on in the world and ZAP! Next thing I know, it's like an hour later. The kids are running around late for the bedtime routine and the kitchen is messier somehow and laundry goes unfolded.
I am not sure how this happens all I know it that I learn all that I want to do, again. I sit here and think about all of the things I have not done, that need to get done. I have decided to do more....tomorrow.

I am also stuck in the perpetual cycle.....I want things, I don't want to work, working allows me to have those things that I want but I still don't want to work ...HELP!! I am a stay-at-home mom stuck in a working womans body.

Ok I am done for now...Mary has dumped epsom salts all over the counter and is running around with the bag of mini-marshmallows.....

I think my daughter is made of rubbermaid....ya know it's made to bouce back. Either that or I got really lucky with Houghton that he did not like to be dangerous.

Mary spent the day sliding off of the ottoman (the one from Drew and Kathy) directly onto her head, then rolling over, laughing hysterically, getting up and doing it again. I felt that I needed to stop her for fear of a heart attack. (Mine not hers!)

She trips on her own feet, the sidwalk or even just the carpet, giggles so adorably, then gets up and keeps going. (With Houghton it was a five minute cuddle, kiss clean the owie etc)

Tonight though, the keeper.....She goes to get into Hougton's bed with him....which mind you she has done plenty of times....and promptly leans on the tent he has and falls off of the bed. Now, normally it wouldn't be that bad...but Houghton has a loft bed. See.....she was shaken up but not a scratch on her....she did worry me that she was drowsy soon after but it was 30 min. past her bedtime. While we rocked and cuddled she did tell me "Mommy, I, OK" and "No Owies!" several times....so that helped. She wanted me to read her a story and sign songs so she couldn't have been that bad. I did make her walk around to make sure she didn't break a leg or something. (She landed on her butt!)

I am not sure what that child is made of but I do know this.....my heart cannot take much more!!!

It's Done!!

Paul has taken the next to last exam. He laughs at me because I want him to call me immediately when he is finished so that I can hear how it went. I guess I am a little superstitious because I can always tell in his voice and how he feels he did on the test.

This one went well. He feels that he might've just gotten by but enough to feel good about it!!!
I am pretty sure he passed becuase of the tone of voice he had. He's also a pretty good predictor of how well he did!!

So cross your fingers and we'll know around mid-December!!

Halloween

Halloween went off without a hitch ....sort of.....we forgot the camera so we are relying on a friend who got some pictures of the kids. I had to go get another friends kids becuase their mother's car broke down and was going to be late....and she was bringing the dinner!!

Needless to say they were adorable and Mary insisted on walking and all the neighbors insisted on talking to her --it took us about 45 minutes to get around one block. Houghton and friends ditched us and went ahead with the other parents....He did hang back after a while when he discovered that he got more attention taking Mary around to all of the houses and speaking for her (which she needs no help with-she is amazingly articulate).

My Soccer Star

This is actually a picture from last weeks game however, I am a little behind in getting them from the camera to the computer.
He really is having fun playing and they finally scored the first goals of the season!! It was a joyous occasion for the team!! It was a tough game, they were evenly matched.
There was one kid on the team who was such a bully and the coach told Houghton to stick like glue to him to keep him from getting the ball.
The trick worked and Houghton has found his calling. About 1 minute after Houghton started his assignment the kid was getting really mad and shoved Houghton and got "yellow carded" (a warning before you get 'red carded' and kicked out) So it was a great moment for our team. He also played defense and had some really good blocks and passes. Amazingly he is improving especially since we have missed practice due to scheduling.
Houghton's results from his most recent swim meet are in. He received a first place!! in the 100m Backstroke! He also got 2 second places for the 50m & 100m freestyle. He also swam the 50m breaststroke but he was DQ'd....which is par for the course at this age.
We also just had parent teacher conferences with his teacher. She really enjoys him and is a joy in class. It was a relief since he is in the gifted cluster. I did discover that free writing is not his favorite thing which is OK since it wasn't mine either. I am really glad that he is doing well and getting along with his class. His teacher is impressed with how well they do as a class.
And he is also eating me out of house and home. His appetite is definitely growing! I can only imagine what's in store in the years to come. I do have to say it doesn't entirely surprise me since he is extremely active.

Where has the time gone?

Wow! I just realized I haven't posted in weeks! Whew...it's been busy. Now that we are in full swing with school, activities and work, I didn't realize how long it's been.

Houghton had his first swim meet of the season two weekends ago. He did really well and beat all of his times. He had his first soccer game last Saturday which they did lose but their coach was impressed with how well they did play. We have struggled with school a little bit. He's doing well with the work....it's paying attention and "staying on task" so we have our work cut out for us!!

Mary is quite the pill. She decided to take a dip in the pool at Houghton's swim meet while no one was looking....after a good butt beating and scolding and my heart rate returned to normal, I enrolled her in swim lessons. So now she gets to swim too!!

Work is going well, crazy but good! I am trying to keep my schedule up and still get to everything at home....it's not working so well these days. Oh well, I am trying to keep up but now I hoping just to not get too far behind.

Paul's exam is coming up on the 1st. He got busted yesterday...I caught him playing video games...so he did go a study some!! It's crunch time!!! I am proud of him but he's sooo close...only 2 exams left...and next year SEATTLE!!

Mary's big girl bed

Mary now has a big girl bed. On Labor Day I decided to morph her crib into the "big girl day bed"....Mary had not figured out how to climb out yet and probably wouldn't have...the bed is mighty high...I also thought why not change it now...before she figures out how to get out. It has worked well....she hasn't realized that she can get out without calling for someone! I know it may be short lived but I'll take it. When I first showed it to her she liked it and climbed in and out but when it finally came time to sleep there....she said "Mommy-fix it"!! So cute!!

Mary is 2

Mary and her partner in crime...Nathan (ie: Devil in a baby suit) .....I am not sure what they were doing but I am sure it was no good!! These two are great...Nathan is exactly 4 weeks younger than Mary ....they act like an old married couple....they are quite entertaining!!

Mary before the party...she was playing outside Mary eating her cupcake! She always has a smile for the camera...she even stopped eating the frosting off the cupcake so I could take the pic. She really enjoyed the attention and not having to take a nap...she is now sound asleep and I might get to sleep until 715am! (wishful thinking...maybe!) We had a few friends over for pizza and cupcakes!!

I cannot believe she is two already!! I seems like just a few months ago we came home from the hospital. Really!! Time does fly....she is really a challenge and such a joy. It does help that she is very verbal....(most of the time) She is really into her babydolls, purses and "pretty dresses" She also like to play with Bubby's hot wheels and legos too!!
Houghton on his first day of school (8/20) Mary on the same day (8/20)

Houghton's Missing Tooth! (7/22)
Mary Being Goofy...not difficult for her! (7/22)

Some Pics

So I forgot some items worth mentioning when I happened to finally download pictures from my camera to the computer.....

Houghton lost his first tooth July 22...it was great because the big tooth was already in behind it!!

I also have pictures from Houghton's first day of school, Back to school party @ Great Skate (Roller skating!! -awesome) and Mary's B-day

Be Careful what you wish for.....

You just might get it!! Where to begin.....
Well, I got a call on my cell at 5:30am...the sitter has the stomach flu and btw, your home phone doesn't work. After picking up said phone, CORRECT! It does not work. So since my alarm has gone off at this point, I call the phone company to have someone come out. Time to get ready for work...Paul takes the kids to friends house so she can take Houghton to school and will watch Mary (which she is excited about) and I rush off to work after making lunches for all (and coffee for the parents!). A typical busy Monday at work, and by 2:40 I am ready to leave...I am able to jump out a few minutes early so I call and say I'll pick up the kids from school and drop off. I am then headed to work at another store until 11pm. (As you might deduce at the time this is posted, I don't make it.) I head out to get my purse from locked up locker and notice it looks weird. I couldn't put my finger on it right away but the pockets were unzipped. I carry a faily good sized tote bag that doubles as a briefcase/diaper bag/purse. I don't use the pockets. I then realized my wallet was missing. UGGGGHHH....So I go right into the office (right there but locked) and notify the manager....I am starting to panic realizing how much stuff I am going to have to replace. The manager then gets on the phone with our LP supervisor (Loss Prevention-an oxymoron at this point I know) to see if there was any video. Of course not but she does ask if I have my keys...NEVER would I have thought of that!!! So I check and nope...not there...I then proceed to run out to the parking lot where I notice my car (I should say minivan) is still there and in tact....My guess on that one is they noticed it was a Honda then realized it was a minivan and scrapped that idea!! :) So that was good but now I cannot even get the kids....no keys!!! So arrangements are made, police called to drive by the house to make sure no one broke in.(they didn't) So got the spare key and retrieved the car. Made lots of phone calls to cancel everything! Grandma came over to entertain the kids and feed us!!! Yeah for Mom and Stepdaddy!!! Paul meanwhile had to do the draft for his fantasy football....annoyed yes but he came home to do it on the computer instead of at work....awwww....plus I am into football so he did good..(we got Peyton Manning) ok so I digress.......While eating or getting ready to eat...I noticed the dining room fan was off....that's a no-no in this heat!! I yelled at Houghton to turn it on and......NOTHING HAPPENED! Now I am up and look in the kitchen...everything is off....soooo I go out to the breaker....nothing, flip the switch any way...no go...do nothing, eat dinner then realize....The fridge and the A/C are out too. So I call the electric company tell them what's up....(and notice...it's only half the house go figure!) They sound concerned and are sending out an after hours tech. When wondering when they were going to get around to fixing it....the rest of the power goes out and we are in total darkness....fortunately Grandma was holding Mary! So we go outside and the neighbors all have power....then Paul notices the guy outback at the transformer in the cherry picker....so a few minutes later....we have power...and A/C again.

Grandma leaves, the kids fight about bedtime.....ahhh and back to normal???

Side note...while on the phone with the credit card company someone calls in....I answer, it was a guy who said his girlfriend found my wallet and they looked up my info in the phone book (finally a good reason to be listed right?) I asked where they found it and it was about a mile from work...I asked if they lived in the area if they could return it to the Walgreen's that I work at. They said they would....I was not about to go and meet them or leave the house. I thought if they actually took it they already know where I work. I have not heard whether or not they turned it in but a little bit of me wants them to be honest and do it....I really want that wallet back!! It was expensive and a gift at that!!

Oh well....no one got hurt but my wallet that got stolen sure feels it....I have to have my house and my car rekeyed.....OUCH!!!

And really while getting ready for work this morning (know it was going to be a 14 hour day, I daydreamed of how to get out of it; knowing full well I wouldn't be able to in good conscience.)

Ahhhh......School

Well, School starts Monday (the 20th) I have waited most of the summer for this!! I know Houghton is ready! We got to have a meet and greet with his class last Thursday which turned out to be great! His teacher was very impressed with him. He is in the "gifted cluster" which basically means "advanced" without the gifted designation given by the standardized tests. I am glad that they recognize the need for it in the school though. His teacher is really well liked and has been highly recommended.

He will also begin back with swimming and soccer again this fall. He is really looking forward to it all. I however, am not looking forward to all of the logistics. It takes a lot of advanced planning! Not only getting to and fro, but also homework, dinner, Mary, and Paul. (and work of course)

Speaking of Mary, she has been quite the Mama's girl lately. I don't mind but sometimes it's a little inconvenient. I think since last week I worked a lot of nights she didn't get to see me. Now she's having a little withdrawl. It's ok, I am glad she likes to cuddle some more now! We've fallen asleep in the rocker a couple of times :)

Something funny!!

So I took Houghton to Target this evening to shop for a birthday present and to exchange one he got for his birthday. While in the card section, Houghton was pondering the kid cards, I noticed these cute bunnies on stickers, magnets etc. So I look a little closer and they have sayings on them, really funny ones. So I immediately call Julia and read her some and I am laughing so hard I am crying!!! I grab a few so I can send them to her and head out. While showing Paul at home, I noticed they have a website (who doesn't?)

Sooooo, here's the link. Funny Stuff!!

www.jimbenton.com

Happy Birthday to Houghton

Wow! It's hard for me to belive my baby boy is now 7 years old! He is so grown-up (yet still very much a boy!) He's really into the stars, moon and sky right now so we took him to Flandrau Planetarium on the U of A campus (GO CATS!!) Since we were going there (Tucson) for vacation we made a little party of it. The kids enjoyed playing with the exhibits they had as well as checking out the "mineral museum" which had tons of cool rocks. We then all went out for ice cream!! Yeah!! Who doesn't like ice cream??? And then back to the hotel to rest up for the pool!!!

Catch up

Okay, so I did go out at midnight to get the book. It was very exciting and I didn't even get to start reading it until 12noon on Saturday. I took me until Wed. to finish...that part I was sad about. I am however very pleased with it. That's all I am going to write about it. If you would like to talk about specifics....call!!

I received wonderful wishes and great presents for my birthday. It was a very happy day and one filled with reminders that I am loved ( and liked!) So I was (and am ) grateful for all I have.

Mary has hit those "terrible" twos...She is quite the contrary one now. It is very funny but quite annoying all the same. She has started singing. She just decided this morning to bust out "twinkle, twinkle, little star" The WHOLE song too!! We were quite impressed. At dinner, she started counting all of the glasses...albeit only up to number 3, but seeing as we never really discussed the order and all, she got it right!!!

Grandma babysat last night (Sat.) so that Paul and I could enjoy dinner with his colleagues for the "passers" dinner. (YEA!!) It was a nice time for us and we are looking forward to the trip to Chicago in Nov. I believe I have accomplished my goal of having 3 dates with my husband this summer. I am also excited because we have another date coming up next weekend when we go to Tucson!!

Wednesday, July 18, 2007

I am having a dilemma. When should I get the new Harry Potter book? At 12:01 saturday or wait until later in the morning? I see the benefits of getting it at midnight...having it for when I wake up...but I will be tempted to stay up and read....then there is the decision to stay up until mid-night. Since I am usually ready for bed by 9pm this could pose a problem. Well, getting up early might seem to be the simple answer, ya know, early to bed etc etc. The only problem there is ....I can sleep. I don't think there is a simple answer....I will probably just wait and see how I feel Fri. evening.

Swim...

We spent this past weekend in Tucson...I have to say it was just a taste for our vacation coming up where we'll get to spend more time.....cannot wait!!

The reason we were there was because Houghton had a swim meet there. It was really nice and we got to use our canopy/tent thingy. I worked out great and kept us out of the sun...a great investment.

Houghton did really well...probably his best meet to date!! I am soooo proud of him! He even got going early ....warm-ups started at 6am both days!! By Sunday, he was dragging!!

He swam the 100m breast, 100m free, 50m free, 50m breast, 50m back, & 50m fly

He got DQ'd on the 100m breast because when he dove in, his first stroke was freestyle but other than that once he switched to breast he swam 100m of breaststroke "legally" it was awesome...he has struggled with that .....he really worked hard! He also got DQ'd on the 50m backstroke because on the start his feet were up too high on the edge of the pool (something his coaches never addressed) and I thought the ref's should have excused but oh well.

He gained time on some of his events but those were on Sunday when he was just pooped!!

He was soo excited that Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt Julia and Tio Rene were all there....and Mary too! She's a good cheerleader (Just like her Nina!)

I was also exhausted...Mary didn't sleep well in the hotel and I still had to be up to get Houghton to warm-ups and to get a good spot for the canopy! On Sunday I also had to drive back...fortunately we got done way earlier than I expected!
Well, we survived the 4th. I worked most of the day while the kids played with grandma! We went to watch fireworks and some neighbors were having some of their own (illegal) fun...which scared Mary. I was not hopeful for the big show but she did really well and even enjoyed them (much to my relief)

She (and Houghton) spent their first 2 days at Ulli's house (the sitter) Mary jumped right in like she's been there from the get go. I do think having her older brother there helps. She even watched "Mary Poppins" today...something that wasn't "Finding Nemo" She then decided that we'll all be "____ Poppins" ie: bubbie poppins, mommy poppins it was quite cute!

This time tomorrow....Paul will be home. I cannot wait....I was not cut out to be a single mom!!! I don't think I will allow him to be apart from us for that long again!!!

A conversation...

Grandma: "We're gonna go shopping"

Mary:"Shopping, Shopping, shopping..."

Houghton: "Huh, why"

Grandma: "No, not really"

Mary: "No shopping, no shopping, no shopping..."

Canada Day

This is in Honor of Drew and Kathy and kids who now reside in Toronto...Happy Canada Day everyone....click on the link to do the puzzle!

Updates...

Ok, here goes...

Paul found out that his passport would arrive in time for his trip & he PASSED his latest exam, all on our 9th wedding anniversary. I'd say that was a good day!

As of today, Paul is in Budapest. They are 9 hours ahead so he's probably still sleeping or just waking up right about now. ( I am getting ready for bed!) They have a pretty detailed itinerary so it's fun to check and think about what he's doing. Houghton likes it too. We've been keeping track on where Paul is with google maps....I think Houghton understands it a little better when he can see just how far away dad is. As far as Mary knows Daddy is either at work (what she says) or on the airplane (what I tell her)

Houghton had swim practice today and he did well. He's getting ready to swim with the older kids (7-8 yrs) but probably not until the fall when school starts.
Funny story though, when leaving practice Mary was quite upset and wanted to go in "Daddy's car". I took a minute but I realized that parked next to us was a Mazda 3....just like Daddy's (different color) Mary was very upset that she could not get into that car....usually when we have taken both cars...Mary prefers to ride with Daddy.....I don't think she really understood that it wasn't our car!!!

It was a little sad though. I am already missing Paul. I have a hard time being alone in the house at night...I hear all the noises and probably make some up too. I do enjoy having the whole bed to myself though! I am nervous about all of the logistics of working and taking care of the kids by myself. I don't know how single mothers do it! I am really thanking my lucky stars that I have Paul and he really is a great participant in parenting.

I hope that I can get things done around the house while he's gone. I really am realizing that I do take his help for granted sometimes. I hope that I can remember that when he comes back!!

Today I took the kids to church with my mother....It was Mary's first time in church since Christmas (I think) I do know now why that is....she has no inside voice at all....and when she doesn't get her way she screams. Our cathedral is very traditional and any noise at all echoes very loudly!! I really had a hard time concentrating but fortunately my mom was there so Mary was content to stay with her. Houghton on the other hand was a little squirmy but was interested in following along, I did enjoy showing him the ropes! I also explained to him that he is now old enough that when school starts he will be going to ccd classed (sunday school) during the week so he will be able to go to mass. He seemed sad but curious about the changes. I just hope that having to help him learn will also further my understanding as well.
Our new priest for the church presided over mass tonite...he was very well spoken, seemed a little nervous but did very well, I am looking forward to introducing myself to him and welcoming him to the parish...he seems really nice. He was just ordained in June. I figured he must have made an impression since he was appointed to our church which is the cathedral for the diocese and also where the bishop resides....

Back to the "updates"...

Houghton has a swim meet next weekend in Tucson. We are going (as well as mom and Glen) thank goodness since we have to be there at 6am Sat. morning. We are staying at Julia's hotel (La Paloma) which will be a mini vacation too!! I am looking forward to it! Julia and Rene will be staying Sat. as well, so we'll be able to spend some time with them! The kids love to see their "Nina & Nino" as well as Bela!! (she gets to stay at the hotel too!!)

Goals

10 things I want to do this summer:

1. Relax!

2. Read at least 2 good books by new authors....any suggestions???

3. Spend more time with the kids @ the AZ science center (we have a membership!)

4. Actually finish one of my cross-stiching projects

5. Go on at least 3 dates with my husband

6. Start saving for a real vacation for next year

7. Spend time at the library with the kids

8. Start a real exercise routine

9. Have a more positive attitude

10. Work on spritual enrichment

Busy Weeks

Ok,well, I have been busy...it seems I just can't catch up lately. We've celebrated Paul's 32nd birthday, coming up on Father's Day and also Julia/Jon's birthday. Houghton has spent the week at Zoo camp...and amazingly enough, they didn't keep him!! He had a great time. It was at times a logistical nightmare as there were 2 other kids going with him. We took turns carpooling! I have returned to work after my surgery. All the talking and running around took it's toll and I am beat!! It will take a little getting used to! It doesn't help that it's also 108 degrees outside! That takes a lot out of you too!!

Getting Better

Ok, so I feel like I am on the upswing now. I am getting my voice back...albeit a little horse. I have been able to eat and am not in pain as much. It is still quite hard to swallow without concentration and my tongue still feels swollen. It feels like forever not just a week ago that I had surgery! I am still taking the pain meds. It makes it easier to eat and drink. I am returning to work on Fri. so we'll see how that goes!

Mary has been quite the cutie lately. She is talking up a storm. She now says her name. It comes out kinda like "Mewy" If she gets the "M" in it. Very cute! She also is saying two word sentences like, "Mewy dop-dops" or "Mewy gink" (Translation: Mary flip-flops and Mary drink)
She will repeat the name of whatever object you tell her. It's fun!! She is still very determined when she sets her mind to something. She'll take you by the hand and direct you...if you don't get it she'll throw a fit. That's usually when I walk away...she doesn't last long!

I Lied!

I am not sure if I was under the influence of anesthesia or what....but I am in PAIN! I have a constant sore throat, my ears hurt, my neck and shoulders hurt from trying to get comfortable. Every swallow (or attempted) hurts! I do have a reprieve for about an hour after I take the pain meds. It allows me not to just sit and hurt. It doesn't allow me to swallow any easier though. I have been trying to force myself to drink but it is more comfortable not to. I know, I know it will help in the long run! Hopefully this is the "worse before it gets better" part. We'll see.......

Recovery

All went well with the surgery yesterday. I am feeling well, a little tired & sore but otherwise pretty well. I do feel a little worse this morning but I think it's because I haven't had a lot to drink yet. (or pain meds) They take care of it and it helps me function. I was able to eat yesterday too, which I think helped. Paul is home with me the rest of the week and I am looking forward to resting up! Now off to eat some pudding ....and pain meds!

Laundry

Well, my old machines have finally bit the dust! Yeah for me! I did a Paul and researched what I wanted for my money. I also waited until this weekend for a sale. I think I got a good deal. Now I have a front loading washer and dryer! Very pretty! The only problem came up when they could not be stacked. I thought it would be nice to have more space but unfortuately the plugs etc are too far apart to accomplish. So I decided to go make another trip to Lowe's and purchase the pedastals. (the machines are really low to the ground) Now the one thing I did not realize until the pedastals were home and unloaded is that they have brackets that attach to the machines. Now if I had paid attention when I bought the washer/dryer, I would have just gotten the pedastals from the get go and they guys who bring and instal them would have taken care of it. Now I am living up to my nickname (given by Paul) high maintenance. We now have to disconnect the washer/dryer and put them on & attach them to the base. I am still very happy....especially since it was a really go deal and they only had one set in the store (besides the display).

So I'll let you know how the clothes actually turn out!

A little less to love....

I am finally having the surgery I should have had years ago. I am having my tonsils taken out next Wednesday the 30th. I was exicted about it until the ENT doc freaked me out about how painful it's going to be. I am really nervous but I've stocked up on gatorade. I am hoping that I'll get to jump start my diet since I won't be able to eat as much!! We'll see I guess. I'll keep you posted!

Hi ho, Hi ho, It's off to work I go....

I am returning to work....sort of. I was back working the ungodly hours when lo and behold, I was offered a promotion of sorts. A normal store (not 24 hrs) and still only a 24 hr work week with a pay raise. It took a little thinking and logistical work but I accepted. This weekend will be my last at the crazy hours. I am looking forward to it but it will pose it's own challenges. Wish me luck!!

What time is it??

Yes, I just wanted to say 'hello' at 3am...I have arrived home from work and am trying to chill so I can finally go to sleep! I wanted to make sure it was documented that I am up at an ungodly hour and when you hear me complain you might just feel a little eensy bit sorry for the choices I made!! :) (insert playing of small violin here!)

Night, night~~~

Just keep swimming....just keep swimming....

It's my new mantra, given that I have seen "Finding Nemo" for the 25th time in 5 days. At least. I do love the movie but I could recite it in my sleep.
Mary & I have been sick for the last 10 days or so. It started as allergies/cold whatever. Now we're both on antibiotics and slowly getting better (I think) Mary is on breathing treatments...hence the many repeats of "Finding Nemo" It really is the only thing that keeps her still for the treatment. We tried "Cinderella" but that didn't work....she kept asking for the "bishies" (Mary speak for fishies!)

She is also anti-breakfast food....she can't get enough of the chewy granola bars. As for a snack that's ok but not for breakfast....We are also eating our fill of "kickies" (Mary speak for chicken nuggets) She will eat them at any time and will stand at the freezer and scream "KICKIES" first thing in the morning. I have no problem with that but it is a little odd. I do have to make sure I feed her a good variety of stuff without too much processed crap.

That leads me to my new quest. Feeding my family (and me) more fresh foods. I am trying to incorporate more fresh veggies and whole grains with our meals. It can be more expensive grocery-wise but I am confidant it's worth it. Don't worry I still make my many deserts! I am trying to get my butt in gear and start working out.....Paul thought it would be a good idea to get the "dance, dance revolution" for the playstation. It would be funny to see all of us dancing around and getting a workout at the same time. Houghton is even excited since he has done it in gym class. We'll keep ya posted!

Mary's first trip to the E.R.

Don't worry...she's OK! It was more for my piece of mind. She and I were playing on the floor and she was on my back...I was pulling on her arms (NOT hard!!) and then a few minutes later she started crying and would not use her right arm. I looked and it was swollen and she cried any time I touched it. So, what does she do next??? She trips and falls in the kitchen, which, when you fall forward, you land on your arms (instinct). So that's what Mary did; and promptly started screaming. She calmed down and seemed to be ok but just to be sure, she and I went to the pediactric E.R.

She spent the time running around the waiting room climbing on chairs and talking to the fishies as well as anyone else who would listen. She wanted to visit every nook and cranny. Fortunately for me she is quite a doll and talks very well, we just don't know exactly what she says.

After only 2 hours, we were on our way with a diagnosis of "hand-maids elbow" basically little kids' tendons in their elbows aren't too developed (or something similar) so when you pull (even slightly) on their arms, it causes their elbow to become dislocated. Now the theory with Mary is that when she fell in the kitchen, she "relocated" her elbow. Hence, the fact she was pretty much back to normal by the time we actually saw the doc.

After all of that, I am glad to say I got piece of mind because I was sure she had broken something. She is much more adventerous than her brother....and she just goes!!

Spring is in the Air!!

It can only mean one thing....SPRING TRAINING!!!

I wanted to make sure we took the kids to at least one game! Houghton had spring break last week so Paul and I took the kids to the Cubs vs. Rangers game. We had lawn seats (which is perfect with kids) it was a blustery but sunny day. We couldn't have asked for better weather. It was about 85 degrees but the chilly wind and partly cloudy skies kept us cool! We all donned our Cub gear and really didn't pay any attention to the game....except when the crowd cheered. (Sorry Dad, it's just that way with little ones) We did see Derek Lee hit a double (which Houghton kept calling a home run because the ball bounced out over the fence :) and Sammy Sosa (now on the Rangers) got a base hit.
(And yes, Mary's onesie is Cubs...Thanks to Bebs!)

Help!!!

Ok, I am stumped. I have spent the last 20 minutes or so trying to figure out how to add more "stuff" to the blog. I don't have any idea what wigets are or why I would want them, how in the world html translates to what I actually see and how do I actually find an answer to my questions..."help" doesn't work by the way. (at least not for those who speak English)

I have gone back to work. Only two nights a week (weekend actually) I work Fri nite 6p-2a and Sun (3-11). I know that sounds a little crazy but I really didn't want to go back to work during the day and have to get a sitter. I am enjoying all of the activites staying home. I usually spend 2 or more days visiting Houghton's classroom and helping out. Mary and I also have playgroup. I also take care of a couple of other kids for a while after school. (More like keeping them out of trouble) It is nice but I miss the freedom of just being able to run out or to have a friend pick up Houghton from school (Mary's usually asleep) Chalk it up to lessons learned. I don't think I 'll be able to keep it up for next year....Houghton is pretty busy with after school activities.

We are making summer plans....I am amazed at all of the parents on the ball about this....summer camps, activites, play dates for the summer....ALREADY!! I don't know what I'm doing tomorrow let alone in several months!! I guess I am now inducted into the "mommy" groups....this is the first summer I will be home to do activites. The trick is to balance all of the "stuff" with downtime....It'll be somewhat easy since Mary still needs to have her naptime (me too!!)

Wacky Weather

Well, last weekend it was 98 degrees. Today it has been raining all day...we had the windows and door open just to hear it come down!! We even had thunder...that's unusual.
Paul and I did have to remind ourselves that it was the rain and not our ceiling coming down.
Mary didn't like the idea of not being able to go play outside. She did however get distracted by her brother.

We are on spring break this week and are enjoying it....well, I know I am. Houghton has another swim meet coming up this weekend. It's the season finale. He'll still be swimming after but there won't be any meets until this summer.

My little fish!

Houghton had an impromptu swim meet 2 weekends ago. It was short and he only had 2 events (vs. 6 or so) Paul took him while Mary and I stayed home (so Mary could sleep and I could clean) Houghton is really coming along and likes to swim. He's really ready for the summer when he can swim more (ie it's warmer) and then he can just goof around too!!

Housework....dreaded Housework

Why does is seem like the laundry never ends? Why can't the Laundry goblin eat more than just one sock? How do my children make messes faster than I can clean them up? These are the questions plaguing me these days. I wish it were politically correct to go around naked. At least for a few days so I can catch up on laundry. That is the only thing that makes me look forward to summer....less clothes....less laundry.

It seems these days I look forward to the weekend for different reasons than most.....I usually don't do much housework on the weekend....mostly because Paul is around and we either have plans or do family stuff. So I spend the week trying to get the cleaning done so I can enjoy the weekend. How's that for irony.

Miss Mary

As I sit here and type Mary is pulling many random books off the bookshelf. She does seem to like the "Men of Mathematics" yes, it belongs to Paul and trust me...is not as exciting as it may sound. She is saying "doggie" to everything, and when asked what the doggie says, she replies, "woo-woo" very cute! She says lots of words now. Her newest one is "eh-oh" (for hello) and gocks (they go on your feet). I have determined that I cannot keep up with her and the house during the same day. I found her the other day on top of the dining room table dumping the salt out of the shaker. Paul asked where I was....I was RIGHT THERE!!! Honest!! She's quick and LOVES to get into everything. I have to close any and all doors once she is awake in the morning. If any of us has happened to leave something out for her....she'll get it! (you'd think that would be incentive to pick our stuff up....nope)

She is adorable and talks more than anyone I know (including me!) We just don't get what all she's saying.....very definintive though. She is somewhat ticklish and I take advantage every chance I get....baby giggles are God's gift to parents!!! They are the best!! She is a very inquisitive and bright child....She makes me appreciate the little things in life, including fuzzies on the carpet which she diligently picks up for me!!! She also has the yummiest cheeks around....Thanks to Daddy for that one....(Houghton is a close second....he's just too old now for too many kisses!!)

Valentine's Day

How did this ever get to be such a big commercial deal? I admit I am a sucker for it....at least I used to be. Now that it's during the week I am to busy worrying about getting the kids stuff ready. For the day as well as the "valentine party" at school. Since I am home now, I am able to help out....last year I couldn't even get the time off! I do like it...and it keeps me from wishing for something special from my valentine.

I am proud to say however that I have trained Paul well (after 13 years!) he has faced the wrath of a lover scorned too many times in the past I suppose to even pretend not to notice that the holiday was coming. He planned a surprise dinner out...even got a babysitter! I really was not expecting anything....REALLY!!! So it was nice....we even got a little thunderstorm!! I got to get dressed up and enjoy a glass of wine with dinner! Then afterwards we went to DQ! I was craving soft serve and the desserts at the restaurant were a little pretentious for me.

Swim

Well, we made it back from Prescott. Houghton had his first travel swim meet. He and I spent the weekend together. We had a great time! Houghton got to spend time with his "swim buddies". He even did pretty well considering he is grounded from TV...that's a whole other post!! Houghton swam in 6 events. He did 2-50 yard events and 4- 25 yard events....he even placed 8th and got a ribbon (they place 1 thru 8) on the 25 yard butterfly...which is so great because the last time he swam it he didn't have a "legal" butterfly (meaning he didn't quite have it right) He even knocked several seconds off of his other events. He is getting high praise from the coaches since he's made such an improvement in only 6 months. Houghton is also excited since they are doing orders for the personalized swim caps (like in the olympics) with his name on them. I am making him pay for them himself....1) He's loaded, thanks to grandma and 2) it's not a necessity since he has a regular cap. I also of course forgot the camera so I have no pics. Oh well, sorry....maybe next time!

Sad News...

This past weekend Houghton and I got to spend some quality time together! We went to a birthday party and grocery shopping for our Super Bowl party. While loading groceries into the car (the store is actually in walking distance to the house) we heard a poor dog getting hit. The car took off and several people from the parking lot went to help. We loaded up very fast and drove over to the dog. He was on the side of the road with another neighbor. He (the dog) did not have a tag but looked cared for. We called the EAMT and waited with the dog. Houghton was great and very caring. We got the info to check on the dog but it didn't look good (he couldn't walk) after calling....we were told he was euthanised. I figured that's what would've happened but it really hurt! I wish we could find out who hit the dog and string them up....How could you hit ANYTHING and NOT stop!!!???? I did tell Houghton (after much debate) what happened. He cried. I did explain to him that we helped the dog and comforted him and they did all they could do to help him. He understood, I think as much as a 6 year old can. He was sad but glad we helped. Then this morning after running an errand I discovered "lost dog" signs by the house....it was him!! I had to do the sad duty of telling this poor woman what happened to her dog. I am glad that I did have the info for her to call the Humane Society so she could have some closure.....Sometimes doing the right thing is very, very sad.

Back in the swing...

Well, the break is over and school is back. Houghton is adjusting and having him get some sleep has been tricky. I am not sure why but so far this week everyone has been up by 6:30am. It's still dark!! I want to stay in bed!!! Houghton is such a light sleeper that any time there is noise...his room is by the kitchen....he's up! Mary has also been up jib-jabberin' away.

She now says "stinky" and "binky" it's very cute! I am on the hunt for free activites that Mary and I can do. I decided that since I am home I should be spending time with Mary and not just cleaning house. She loves to be outside and play and explore!

The picture on top is Mary playing with a toy she got for Christmas....She loves it! It pops up the balls and they roll around and pop up again...Houghton loves it as much as she does! I really thought this toy would bomb....shows what I know!
(in case you're wondering...her shirt says..."forget Santa....here comes Grandma") and that's the truth!!!

The other two pics are from our trip to the cabin up north. Houghton got to make a snow angel and he was a good big brother....he pulled Mary around on the sled! We found a nearby hill and got to go sledding! I haven't done that since I was a kid in Omaha!! It was a blast....and we had snowpants too!! Wow--didn't think I would ever need those in AZ!

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year!!

Since it is now the new year and my resolutions are already off to a great start (not)....We had a lovely Christmas and made it to midnight mass...with 2 kids in tow. Houghton was groggy through it all but not Mary....she was wide awake and wanted to walk up and down the aisles! She was even awake talking in her bed when Paul and I went to bed at 1:30am!! We had to do our best to keep her quiet since our church now broadcasts the mass we attend on cable!! Mary now goes to the nursery on Sundays!!!

The kids did sleep in which was nice. When Mary woke us up at 8am, Houghton was up having breakfast. Paul asked him if he noticed anything....he said matter of factly...."Oh, yeah, Santa was here" No running in and yelling "Mom, Dad LOOK!" I guess that's over. Thank goodness for Mary! She found her shopping cart (which was too big to wrap" and was done....we had to convince her to open the other presents. She did like to tear the wrapping paper....just not enough to open the boxes....she just liked tearing the paper!!

We had family over Christmas day and I am proud to say I cooked....all day! I really do like being at home and having everyone over to my house....it makes it easier on the kids too!!
I made a frittata for brunch (and mimosas!!!) Paul made a beef roast for dinner which was excellent! (yeah-meat thermometer) It was a very relaxing nice time! Now I am left with trying to figure out how to put back the decorations etc! I am proud of myself for not going out and collecting any more the day after Christmas!

My brother Jon and his girlfriend arrived from Lincoln, NE on Wednesday. We picked them up and took them out to lunch and let them sleep. Then Wed. evening I got the stomach flu!! Out of no where....I was very sick for about 36 hours....Thanks to Paul for staying home and making sure I was ok....I did go to the doc and got medicine for my stomach which made it so much better! I actually was able to drive (with the 2 kids) to Tucson so that Julia, Jon and I were able to get pictures done for my mom's Christmas gift (which was a hit!).

We all met at the cabin up north (Payson) for new year's. Julia, Rene and Bela; Jon and Liz, and all of us, with Mom and Glen stayed there for the weekend. We went sledding and played in the snow!! Mary was not sure what to make of it and Houghton dove right in and was a trooper. Even after Uncle Jon threw a snowball at his face and almost gave him a shiner!!
Houghton got sick after having nothing but junk food. Then Paul got the stomach flu....so he missed most of the weekend....he woke up for midnight though and was feeling better....I think they did not have it as bad as I did though!!!
Since we were all together for New Year's we celebrated Christmas again....Houghton and Mary made out like bandits!! I suppose they were pretty good this year!

We made it home new year's day and unloaded more than we left with!

All in all we had a wonderful Christmas and New year holiday!! We feel blessed to have been able to spend it with our friends and family!!

We wish everyone an even better 2007 filled with happiness, love and laughter!!
